I just saw this stupid comment. FYI it had been turned over to build oil pressure before starting, and it wasn't even revved up when started. Don't you love these jerks that seem to know everything without any background.

A set of straight floats run anywhere from 20 to 30k for new ones, a new set of amphibious floats runs about 90 to 100k. Amphibious floats are also heavier and that weight comes out of your useful load. They make special floatplane trailers that slide in between the floats, then raise up to carry the plane. This trailers make it easy to load and unload the floatplane when doing stuff like this.

Nick B can get a use set of amphibs much cheaper. Not uncommon to find a good set for 10-30k depending what kinda work they need. Just last week I saw a set for a Cessna 180 that just needed the hydraulics overhauled for $10k CAD. But they are do cut into payload on a smaller aircraft like a 172 where it’s at a premium.

Alex3745 yes I am aware of the used amphibs, my prices were with new ones but even used ones command a price premium over used straights. You could pick up some Edo straights for a C180 for $5k if you wanted that might need work or fittings, or some straight Aerocet 3500Ls for 15k used. But the same Aerocet 3500 amphibs will run 25 to 30k used, 90k new with the gear advisor system. In addition to the weight of the gear itself, weight comes from the hydro pump, backup hydro pump, lines and fluid reservoirs. Insurance is also much higher on amphibs because of the likelyhood of forgetting to put the gear up or down depending on your landing surface. Not all aircraft are even certified for amphibious floats, as an example early Cessna 182s (A-D models) are only certified for Edo straight floats

Amphibious floats are much heavier due to the wheels, brakes, and retraction mechanism. That means less stuff you can carry in the plane...
